How might we engage Dutch households in a more sustainable lifestyle through interactive challenges, practical guides, and energy-saving tips?

Introduction

The "EnergieVanVandaag" project is a collaboration with Essent, a leading energy provider in the Netherlands, aimed at promoting sustainable living among Dutch households. The platform was designed to offer personalized energy-saving tips, practical advice on sustainability, and interactive challenges that encourage users to reduce waste and adopt greener habits. Our design team took the lead in crafting an engaging and informative experience, ensuring that the platform aligned with Essent's business objectives of driving sustainable energy consumption while addressing the environmental concerns of the target audience.

The Challenge

The key challenge was to drive engagement among Dutch residents by making sustainability actionable and motivating. Research showed that while many individuals wanted to adopt more sustainable practices, they often lacked the knowledge, motivation, or simple tools to make meaningful changes in their daily lives. The existing solutions in the market were either too generic or overwhelming, leaving users feeling disconnected from the larger sustainability movement. We needed to create an intuitive platform that simplified the process, providing users with tailored tips, rewards, and easy-to-access information to foster long-term behavioral change.

Methodologies Used

  • Design Thinking Process: We employed the Double Diamond design framework, focusing on discovery through user research, ideation for creative solutions, and iterative design testing.
  • User-Centered Design: Extensive user research, including interviews and usability tests, was conducted to uncover the pain points Dutch users face in adopting sustainable practices and to ensure the platform's usability.
  • Behavioral Nudging: Leveraged behavioral insights to motivate users through interactive challenges, gamification, and rewards like gift cards and discounts on energy-saving products, such as solar panels and home insulation services.
  • Usability Testing: Multiple rounds of usability testing were conducted to ensure the platform was easy to navigate and provided clear, actionable steps that users could implement.

Impact

The result was the creation of "EnergieVanVandaag," an easy-to-use digital platform that empowers Dutch residents to embrace sustainability in their homes and communities. Users can access practical guides, participate in challenges, and receive rewards for adopting energy-saving practices. The platform solidified Essent's position as a forward-thinking, sustainability-driven company in the energy market.
